Aftershock 6.4

Named my last canvas after a 6.4 aftershock experience in Christchurch, New Zealand.

I stayed at Cherry’s and Richard’s home that luckily survived the big earthquake. Their home had a wooden structure, which is apparently most ‘earthquake proof” as it sways while the earth moves. I sure saw and felt the house swaying and trembling that day, the 13th of June 2011. Long scary night it was, more that fifty aftershocks were counted.

All the best to the people in Christchurch who are still experiencing regular aftershocks.

For graff addicts like us Basel is one of the best places on earth to visit. Being a crossroad of many trainlines and highways this city has an incredible amount of bridges, tunnels and walls to paint.

Everyone who has visited the famous Basel lines knows what we're talking about here.. high quality graffiti walls for miles and miles..Awesomeness to the max!

Just over the border in germany is also the Carhartt galery which is always worth visiting.

Besides that we have become friends with a lot of people over there..so enough reasons to visit this great city at least once a year!

Writers' paradise

Exploring old factories is a hobby that most graffiti writers share..So when I discovered this place it made my heart beat a little bit faster. Lots of unspoiled walls and great spots to paint.

Today I had a painting date with LL homie Puaks and his mate Rems so we decided to go to this spot again. During weekdays it's not possible to paint everywhere because people are working in the area but as long as you stay inside of the buildings and don't make too much noise there are still a lot of options for painting..

Puaks and Rems went all out on this wall and did some really nice burners. But since I already painted some very detailed pieces last week I was more into doing some quick pieces:

Oh and by the way: I painted piece number 99, 100, 101 and 102 of this year:-)

After Puaks and Rems finished their wall we got together for some more silver action.

All in all: Day well spent!

Last weekend we were invited together with Bates, Sobek and Kcis to paint at the Factory festival in Miskolc,. An industrial city in the northeast of Hungary.

As the name of the festival might have given you a hint already this event took place in an old abandoned factory.

When we woke up in the morning and watched the huge factory filling up our view from the balcony completely from the left to the right we began to understand the dimensions of this complex:

As it turned out the festival area only covered a small part of the factory complex. So we left the festival area to explore the industrial world beyond the gates.

Being Graffiti writers we already did a fair bit of urban exploring in our lifes but this place was beyond anything we’ve seen before! To give you an idea: in the glory days of communism 50.000 comrades worked in this steel factory. The complex stretched out for miles. One appealing wall after another…

Returning from our discovery tour we had to wait for some more hours until our cans arrived. Pretty frustrating to have so many great walls within reach and no cans to paint them.

Finally at the end of the afternoon our paint arrived and we were told that we had to paint a wall inside a skatepark… At that point our moral was pretty low and time was running out...which might have reflected a bit in our artwork:

On our last day we thought it was time to go out and paint all the nice spots we had seen on our discovery tour on the factory lot. Starting with some freights.

But then things got complicated: as a small part of the factory was still in use some security cars patrolled the area 24/7 and these guys started giving us shit. Acting as the stupid non-hungarian speaking tourists that we were we managed to finish the freights but after that it was definitely the end of the good times in the factory area.

Frustrated and still eager to paint we found another spot in the gypsy ghetto of Miskolc. This time it was the local cops giving us a hard time. After 1 hour of negotiating, and telephone calls with the festival organization and the owners of the walls we were finally set to go..

Chas did this wall with the serbian twins and Slovakia’s finest mr. Kaisy, while Does went loose on the other side of the building:

Not wanting to be beaten on quantity Chas squeezed out this quicky just before nightfall to even the score: Does 7- Chas 7.

Let’s call it a draw…

Spray Beast meets Puaks…

Puaks has taken some time out to answer a few questions and has done a seriously nice pair of sketches for Le Beast. Also i hope he can teach me a bit about the Netherlands, as it is a place i am embarrassingly ignorant of.

Greetings Puaks, how do you do?

I’m doing very well, despite of the weather conditions outside, thanks!

Please give me a bit of insight into how long you have been writing, how you got in to it and anything else you think we should know?

I started to write about ten years ago, drawn to it by some burner walls a few oldskool kings from Nijmegen did in my neighbourhood. I also used to live really close to on of the oldest halls of fame in Holland, and the first time I walked in there was no turning back. Loved it instantly.

Now, you are from the Netherlands, Nijmegen i believe. For those of us who cant speak Dutch, could you spell this phonetically for us?

I really don’t know, Nej-mee-ken perhaps! It’s a pretty small place, but with a great history. We believe it’s the oldest town in Holland, it exists for over 2000 years now. Also from a graff-point of view there is quite a legacy. Back in the 80’s NMGN had some serious stylewriters and a lively scene.

Nijmegen is relatively small, you must know all the writers there?

Nowadays Nijmegen has a small but consistent scene and the styles vary a lot, that keeps it interesting. It is a big difference compared to bigger cities in Europe with countless crews and writers ofcourse..

What is Nijmegen like for painting this time of year, do you have to wear 2 pairs of gloves?

COLD, that’s what it is…this is the season that your beer is warmer than your hands when you are painting outside, although they were laying in the fridge all night!!! Luckily we also have some inside spots to paint for the rainy/snowy days, but I prefer to paint outside.

I have been watching your stuff on the internet for a few years now, both ‘Puaks’ and ‘Zekor’ pieces. You have always painted nice letters with bright colour schemes and really clean lines. What has been most inspiring for your painting over the last few years for painting?

That’s really hard to point out I think…I just want to do better every time I paint or do a sketch. When I look around I see the standards in general going up, style-wise, technique-wise and mentality-wise, and I’m always striving to push myself to do better then my next piece. A lot of things inspire me, not only graffiti. Friends, travelling, music.

I always like to see other peoples approaches to letters, techniques, colour schemes and how to paint a piece. Does and Chas organised this jam last spring in Holland, with a great line up stylewriters. It was inspiring to talk about style and the different approaches to it.

What do you think of graffiti at the moment, can you see a change in the scene with all the paint sponsorships and corporate style jams that seem to be popping up a lot?

Graffiti is definitely changing, as is any other subculture. I don’t think it’s a bad thing actually. It just creates different possibilities. I think foremost that people have to do whatever they like. Some people only do canvasses, some do burners with 1000’s of colours, some only do steel or street bombing and some do it both. One thing doesn’t rule out the other in my opinion.. I wouldn’t mind if a paintcompany offers me 75 free cans a month!

What does Puaks mean, if anything?

I found out it means ‘group’ or ‘tribe’ in Indonesian, but it doesn’t mean shit actually. I just made it up because I liked the letters at the time and the sound of it.

Who do you paint with mostly, i like the stuff you have done with Rems!

I have done a lot of pieces together with Rems, we make a really good team. We sketched quite a few pieces together actually. He begins to sketch al letter, I jump in and vice versa. I think we both learned a lot from that stuff because we look at letters in a different way sometimes, and his style is quite different from mine! Besides that he’s one of my best mate’s for a long time!

A few times a year I paint with Chas LL. Really digging the stuff he has done over the years!! He pushes his style constantly, has great technique and is full of good ideas. Big up!

I also paint regularly with Poen & Knal from my crew and of course my man Area, who is going strong these days!

Are there any writers you are particularly feeling at the moment?

I dig a lot of stuff. Most of the content on SprayBeast I like actually! There are so many good writers that are killing it out there. Really too much to mention..

The sketches you did for Spraybeast are fucking nice, as are all the outlines i have seen from you, do you take outlines to the wall when you paint?

Almost never. Most of the stuff I do is freestyle. When I really take the time for a piece, I take a sketch with me. As you may have seen I sketch a lot. For me its an important part of graffiti.

What is your favourite place to paint and have you got any plans for traveling soon?

I absolutely love Berlin. As a city and as a place to paint. I really have to go there more often!

I have enough plans, that’s for sure. Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, China and South America are high on the list..!

Any interesting hobbies outside of graffiti?

Traveling and drinking beers.

Have you ever seen Nina Simone walking around doing the daily shopping, apparently she is a resident of Nijmegen.

Sometimes when we are really drunk we still see her ghost wandering around the city center, singing ‘Nuff said’!

Chas LoveLetters is one of the 4 founding members of The LoveLetters Crew. It started in the south of Holland and the crew has been making its mark on the graffiti scene since 2006. LoveLetters has now grown to a ten strong European crew with writers from Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. I caught up with Chas LoveLetters and asked him some questions about his life....

Where are you from originally? Where are you based now? How long have you been writing/ painting for? When did you first notice graffiti around you?

I started my graffiti career in 1989 in Nijmegen, a city that used to have a very strong scene with local kings like Vision, Dragon, Wizard and Son103. After some intensive years of getting up I got in trouble with the law big time. It put my graffiti career to a halt. I also moved to Venlo a city with almost no graffiti scene. For about 7 years I lived a life without graffiti, but in 2000 I got bored with my life as it was and graffiti was the perfect escape route. Nowadays, I sometimes ask myself why the hell I spent so long without painting. It’s like I wasn’t existing in those years, some kind of a grey mist, I’m so glad I picked up my cans again!

What's the graffiti scene like where you’re from? Are you involved with any of the other elements of hip hop?Well, in my little city there is almost no graffiti scene and I don’t care much about hip hop. I’d rather listen to some good electro or rock music. In the last years I also organized some nice techno festivals in my hometown.

What crew do you write with, how many members are in the crew, how long has the crew been painting for?5 years ago Nash and Does started the LoveLetters crew and since I was already painting with them a lot, I immediately joined the crew. Other members are Tumki , Ozer, Dater, Rusl, Biser, Sean2 and Dare. The passing away of Dare in 2010 hit us very hard. I’m glad and proud to have known him and we’re intending to keep his name up high!

Where do you travel to paint?I travel a lot, it’s one of the best things about this crazy hobby! Off course I have painted in a lot of different countries within Europe but I have also left my marks on more exotic locations such as China, Australia, Morocco and Ghana. The best graffiti trip I had was the one with Does to Bogota, Colombia. That’s spray heaven!

Have you studied art in any form? If so, does it have an effect on your current style?Nope, just the street academy for graffiti art

Is this a hobby/passion for you, or do you earn a living from it? If not, what’s your 9 to 5 job? Do you have any other interests and do they influence you work?It’s my hobby, my passion and also my work. I earn a living from doing commissions and workshops. I’m also sort of an Ironlak reseller. Living the graffiti life doesn’t leave much time for other stuff, I try to give my family the attention they deserve and I like to go to a nice music festival every now and then to drink some beers with my friends.That’s about it.

Graffiti and street art has been more sociably acceptable and recognised in the last 5 years, what do you think this is down to? Well, a movement this big can’t be denied I guess.

What are the other writers like in your home town/city?I’m pretty much the only writer here.

What inspires you and what creative influences do you take from when you paint?As everybody I am influenced by everything I see, and most of what I see is Graffiti. Sometimes I think I shouldn’t be looking so much at other people’s pieces because it’s hard to avoid being influenced, but on the other hand I just love to see good styles and the crazy ideas that some writers come up with!

Freestyle or sketch?In the past I always brought a sketch to the wall but in the last years I have also been freestyling a lot. It gives me a lot of self confidence knowing that I’m able to rock a piece without any preparation. However I think my style is developing a lot quicker when I sketch before painting.

How would you describe your work?Legible lettering, balanced pieces, strong colour combos and an eye for detail.

Which writers inspire you at the moment? There are so many writers that inspire me! Smash137, Dems, Roid, Kemr, Zoer, Berst, Askew, Sobek & Kcis, Wild Boys, Does, Rusl, Puaks, Mister and the list goes on and on. What all these writers have in common is a very good choice of colours, strong lines and a lot of details. That’s what I like in graffiti and off course that’s displayed in my work as well.

Who do you like to paint with? Have you got any favourite spots?I’m happy that I know a lot of very talented, cool people to paint with. Most of the time I don’t listen to music while painting, I’d rather listen to the funny stories and stupid jokes of the people that I am painting with! I’m also happy that I have painted on a lot of very cool spots around the globe but the best one is still the lines in Basel. That place has a very nice atmosphere, I have painted there with Dare on several occasions and these are special memories.

What projects, if any, are you working on for 2011?For 2011 my goal is quantity. I have painted over 50 pieces in the first 4 months and I’m not planning on slowing down.

What piece of yours are you most proud of? Every year I paint about 10 pieces that I’m really proud of, 10 pieces that I hate and between 50 and 100 pieces that are necessary for developing my style towards the pieces that I can be proud of.

The Internet, good or bad for graffiti?Having grown up in the pre internet age I know that it used to be more romantic travelling to another city or country to discover new styles and meet new writers that you’ve never heard of. I don’t want to sound like a grumpy, old man saying that everything used to be better back in the day, I like to check out the new stuff from other writers on internet. I even like to check out the stupid shit that people write on forums, thinking that they know it all. It brings a smile to my face.

There must be some downsides to the graffiti/street art scene, what are they?You’re sure there are downsides? I can’t think of any!

Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you get to where you are now?I have a very supportive girlfriend who takes care of things when I’m away on one of my graffiti trips. It’s because of her that I’m able to live the Graffiti life to the fullest!

What’s your perfect day?Sunny, not too hot, some of my crewmates, a nice wall, some beers afterwards and then later that night blasting a huge trackside spot.

Any shout outs?I haven’t seen my homie Does since I was in Australia last November. In July he is coming back to Europe and I’m really looking forward to painting with him again!..So this shout goes to him.
